More From The Shop FloorExamples of reverse engineering and CAD drafting from measured parts, reference photos and physical samples.

These examples show the workflow from a real physical part or measured sample through to a usable CAD model, drawing or production-ready geometry. This service is useful when a part needs to be reproduced, modified, cleaned up or re-created without starting from an existing proper CAD file.

Reverse engineered folded bracket

A formed bracket measured from a real physical sample and converted into a clean CAD model. The measured part photos help capture the main geometry, hole placement, material thickness and bend relationships, and the CAD model turns that into something repeatable and ready for drafting or manufacture.

Measured folded bracket reference photos with handwritten dimensions
Measured sample photos used as the reference for rebuilding the bracket in CAD.
CAD model of a reverse engineered folded bracket with dimensions
Clean CAD model showing the rebuilt bracket geometry and key dimensions.
  • Useful when an existing bracket or formed part needs to be redrawn from a sample
  • Can be used to create clean manufacturing geometry, drawings or updated versions of the part
  • Helps turn rough measurements and physical references into repeatable CAD data

Measured part to CAD drawing and 3D model

A smaller flat steel component measured from a physical sample and then rebuilt into a clean drawing and 3D model. This type of workflow is ideal for laser-cut parts, replacement components, file recreation and cleanup of simple-to-moderate geometry.

Measured flat steel component with handwritten dimensions and notes
Measured physical sample used as the starting point for CAD recreation.
Clean CAD drawing of the recreated flat component
Clean drawing view generated from the rebuilt CAD geometry.
3D CAD model of the recreated flat component
3D model of the part after the geometry was rebuilt and cleaned up.
  • Well suited to reverse engineering from a sample, sketch or dimensioned photo
  • Good for laser-cut parts, replacement items and jobs where the original file is missing
  • Can lead into DXF, drawing, prototype or production-ready outputs depending on the job

FAQ

Can you work from a photo?

Yes. Clean photos are useful, but detailed dimensions are needed if the part is functional and needs to match, assemble with, or replace another part.

Can you make DXF or DWG files?

Yes. DXF and DWG creation for laser cutting from existing parts, templates, sketches, PDFs or photos is one of the most common drafting requests we get.

Can you help develop a product idea?

Yes, especially for practical parts that need to be made or tested.
